What could be better than a fun-filled holiday season? A relaxing, fun-filled holiday season filled with simple holiday appliance tips. With the kitchen being the hub of holiday festivities, it’s important for kitchen appliances to work well. Here are tips to prepare your refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven for the holidays.
Refrigerator Tips
We want to get the most out of our refrigerator space, especially during the holiday season. Start with a thoroughly cleaned refrigerator. We like mixing one tablespoon baking soda with one quart of warm water to create a fantastic cleaning solution. Remove everything from the shelves and drawers and wipe down walls.
But WHERE you store certain items can optimize their freshness as well. To prevent spoilage and reduce the risk of Listeria, the FDA recommends maintaining a temperature at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. As you place items in the refrigerator, be sure to position items that require an even temperature in the upper portion of the fridge. Things like butter, milk, leftovers, and healthy snacks are ideal on the upper shelf. The lower shelves carry a colder temperature, which is great for meats, fish, produce, and eggs. Finally, condiments and well-preserved foods work best in the door. This is the warmest part of the fridge. Don’t overload the refrigerator; it needs space for cold air to circulate.
Dishwasher Tips
During the holiday season, a well-running dishwasher is your secret weapon for keeping your plans on track. To ensure your dishwasher is properly cleaning dishes, run your kitchen faucet until the water turns hot. Then, start the dishwasher.
To keep your dishwasher smelling fresh and running efficiently, add a dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar, positioned upright on the top rack, then run the hot cycle. This will eliminate those pesky odors. Then, be sure to regularly remove those food particles collecting in the basket at the base.
Stove top/Oven Tips
There’s special meaning behind your holiday recipes, so it’s important to understand how your oven behaves. Joy Wilson of joythebaker.com, has a helpful tip to check your oven temperature: Place six slices of white bread in a cold oven, then set the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Check the bread slices at 12 minutes, 18 minutes, and again at the 20-minute mark.
“After 18 to 20 [minutes] take the bread out of the oven and place on a baking sheet on the counter in the same configuration as the oven shelf,” said Joy. “Take a good look. What pieces of bread have more browning?” Depending on the shades of browning, you can identify the oven’s hot spots and uneven temperature. If it looks too brown, it’s time to call for appliance maintenance help.
